Random Admission Thoughts, April 2012 Edition - UGA Undergraduate Admissions Random Admission Thoughts, April 2012 Edition We have finished up the freshman decisions (except for the wait list decisions that we will not know about for a while), summer transfer decisions are almost completely done, and fall transfers are in mid-stream. As such, here are a few pieces of information, wisdom, and random ideas. Transfer applicants, please make sure that all transcripts from all colleges attended are in. Even if it was a summer course, a dual enrollment course in HS, or whatever, we need official transcripts from all colleges. Do not have a fax sent to us, as we will just shred it. Why waste your time and ours. Again, no faxes. Everyone, please make sure to not wait until the last minute to take care of things. If you are late for a class, it will go on without you. If you are late for a plane, it will take off without you. Please dont let a college move on without you just because you did not take care of things on time. Transfer students, please make sure to look at the grades on your college transcripts and know that we look at all grades in transferable courses, even if you repeat a bad grade. I just looked at a transcript where the college listed the GPA as a 3.00, but we have it as a 2.15, because of numerous F grades in the first term that the other college waived when the course was repeated with better grades. It is not like the Men in Black where you can just hit a button and we forget about some grades. Admitted freshman, deposits are due on May 1. Do not wait until the last minute of April 30th to make a decision if possible. In addition, do not double deposit (unless you are on a wait list and then get admitted off of it, in which case you should contact the school you no longer will be attending). Double depositing is bad! Admitted freshman (and transfers), keep your grades up! We will be looking at your final grades, and we have revoked admissions at times. I hate those calls, so please do not make me call you about a big drop in your grades. Wait listed students, please know that if we could make wait list decisions sooner, we would, but we have to wait and see what the freshman class is looking like numbers wise. The wait in wait list is there for a reason, even if it is painful. Sorry! Rising seniors in HS, start make plans for visiting campuses, determining who might write your recommendations, get a copy of your HS transcript after junior year is complete, etc. As well, rising seniors, review how the colleges you are interested in look at the SAT and ACT scores. For instance, if you send UGA three SAT scores, we will only use the highest subscores, so you do not have to worry about score choice. In other words, if you are interested in UGA, send in your test scores early! This will let us communicate with you earlier, will make sure you do not forget to send the scores, etc. You would not believe the number of people who are just now calling us because they forgot to send in their SAT/ACT scores, even with us reminding them 3+ times. Find time to read a book outside of your normal school work. If you have time to tweet, get on Facebook, or play Call of Duty, you have time to read. Just do it! Freshman and sophomore HS students, your grades in your first two years do count. We will be looking at them. So do not slack off and think we will just ignore these grades. Transfer applicants, please be patient. We have roughly 2,500 fall transfer applicants, and it takes time to review them. I would guess that about 800 decisions already made, but it takes a while. Again, patience. On April 7, To Kill a Mockingbird will air on the USA channel, 8 PM EST. If you get a chance, watch it! It is wonderful! Parents, do not listen to rumors. If someone says I heard that UGA , run away with your hands over your ears. Really, do that! Admitted Freshman, choose a college that fits what you are looking for in a college, not what your friend/neighbor/boyfriend/girlfriend think is the right one for you. Do a Random Act of Kindness today. Trust me, it will make at least two people smile. Go Dawgs!

Letters to Treasure

   As a fourth-grader who loved a great adventure, reading seemed to be the ticket to experience exciting mysteries, daring adventures, and opportunities to learn about countries that I knew I’d never see in real life. A book could transport me to the edge of a river in a remote village in Iceland, make me a princess trying to save her people, or beam me over to a tropical island in the Pacific. It’s not that I didn’t have any real adventures of my own. Growing up on a farm in Indiana provided plenty of excitement. We watched in awe as new calves entered the world, built forts in the haymow, drove tractors, and survived a power outage during a blizzard by snuggling near the Jotul, our beloved wood stove. But a book was different. There was something magical about reading a well-written book filled with vivid images, colorful characters, and truths to contemplate. Reading became a passion and fulfilling pastime. I’m not sure where the idea came from, likely my mother, but I decided I wanted to write a letter to my favorite authors. You see, by the end of my favorite books, the characters were good friends, and I figured that anyone who could create those characters must be a remarkable person. I wanted to meet them. Preparing me well, my mother, who was a published author many times over, cautioned me that I might not get a response. â€Å"They get thousands of letters and can’t possibly reply to all of them.† But she encouraged me to try, feeling confident that at least one would respond, and the endeavor would be useful in other ways. Of course, there was no Internet in those days, so my letters were hand-written. I wish I had a copy of them, as I’m sure they’d make me laugh. Much to my surprise, the responses began to arrive. Beverly Cleary, beloved author of too many books to mention, sent a typed page about herself and wrote â€Å"Thank you for your card.† After recently reading the statistics of how many letters she receives each year, I feel honored for the handwritten message.                                        Then there was Molly Cone, author of the Mishmash stories, who sent a personally written memo and a gift of a bookmark with a note to me. You’ll see in the photo that it was 1973. You can do the math.                                        Apparently a little short on my history knowledge, I wrote Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her foundation graciously sent me a few pages of information about Laura’s life and three printed photographs. I was ecstatic. One of my favorite series at the time was The Littles. In fact, those were the books that finally made reading â€Å"click† with my youngest son. John Peterson hand wrote a personal note and included a picture that I must’ve asked for.                                        Continuing the tradition with my own children, we wrote a few of their favorites. Have you read Holes? After listening to the audiobook during a family trip, my kids wrote the author, Louis Sachar. He responded with a letter in an envelope with the return address of "Camp Greenlake." Everyone loves mail, but when it’s a letter from a favorite author that you wrote to, it becomes a life-long memory. Do authors still respond to letters today? I’m pretty sure they do. So challenge your children and students to write to their favorite authors and make a scrapbook. It’s an exciting family activity but would also make a great classroom treasure—and of course, it’s a perfect opportunity to practice those writing skills.       Laura discovered IEW while homeschooling her three children and now enjoys helping other families transform their students' abilities by introducing them to IEW. Corrie Ten Boom is the daughter of a popular watchmaker and christian living in Holland during the beginning of Hitler, the Nazis, and hatred against Jews. The Ten Boom’s, however, always do the right thing and help anyone in need. Before their mother died, their household was always full of poor neighbors needing food or tea or anything else they could provide. This kindness continues into the beginning of the Holocaust. Corrie begins to join an underground system, involved with helping and sheltering Jews. At first, she was just trying to get some to different places where they would be safe, however. Corrie got so involved that the watch shop, called the Beje. became the center. She had monthly deliveries of food ration card, new Jews would show up to her door almost weekly, and the rest of the people involved in the underground had a secret code or phone calls, revolving around watch-talk. Shapes of ice do depend on how fast they felt, no doubt about it. Anyway, the answer to that experiment is yes because it is scientifically proven. Many scientists in the world have wondered this same question, and they all have turned out to get the same answer. When these people finally got their answer, they all have gotten close, if not the exact same answers if they have chosen the shapes to form. Scientists have done this experiment in many ways, such as choosing different shapes to form and melt, choosing the amount of water to freeze, and the temperature of the room they have to melt the cubes.( University of Illinois, 2007). One important thing that is looked at is the scientists’ hypotheses. Many scientists’ hypotheses are very different, knowing it is an educated guess, but the end result shows they all come up with nearly the same answer, and that is the rectangular ice cube will melt the fastest, no matter how large they make the cube. ( Zimmermann, 2017). The most complicated question behind this experiment is why is it the rectangular shape that melts the fastests. The rate at which the ice cubes melt is also called the fusion rate. Ice melts when a warmer medium, such as air or water comes into contact with the ice surface. Also, in order to know exactly which shape melts the fastest, they need to have the same volume, or the experiment will be pointless. An important thing to know is the greater the surface area, the quicker the ice cube will melt. Other people’s experiments have been slightly different than what we have here, but they are known to choose the rectangular shape as one of their shapes the majority of the time. (â€Å"Ice Melting†, 2013). It also states that each scientists went through about the same struggles during the process of the experiment. ( l Zimmermann, 2017.). The most simple struggle was getting the particular shape out of the container without having it break or making it deformed. Because the shapes weren’t the normal shape, it is tricky to get it out of the ice cube tray. Many scientist have had a question, and that is the exact opposite of the question people usually deal with. Not how fast they melt, but how fast they freeze. All in all, the rectangular shape, because it is flat and has more surface area than the others, will melt the fastest.
